Kinofurusato Gallery of Traditional Arts and Crafts

This arts center in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture features wood culture and traditions that trace back to ancient days. Inside, you’ll find a number of traditional crafts, including kanuma-kumiko shoji woodwork, kanuma-sokiridansu dressers, and the “sculpture float” —a city-designated Tangible Cultural Property used in the Kanuma Autumn Festival.

You simply must see the elaborate decorations of the sculpture float. In the “kumiko-building experience,” you can put together an original coaster out of wood chips.

Utsunomiya, the most populous city in Tochigi, is about an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and serves as a major transportation hub for the different regions of the prefecture. In addition to being known for its famous Gyoza (pan-fried dumplings), Utsunomiya is called the “city of jazz and cocktails”, as there are numerous venues for hearing live jazz music, and the bartenders are quite skilled, so there are plenty of options for enjoyable nightlife.
