Akechidaira Plateau

Located near the top of the 2nd Irohazaka Slope, Akechidaira is a scenic rest area with a spacious parking lot, making it a popular stop for visitors to take a break while enjoying the magnificent surroundings.

From here, a short 3-minute ropeway ride takes you to the Akechidaira Observation Platform at an elevation of 1,373 meters. One of Nikko’s most iconic and popular viewpoints, it offers sweeping panoramic views of Mt. Nantai, Lake Chuzenji, and Kegon Falls cascading from the lake, all set against a backdrop of majestic mountain ranges that create a truly breathtaking landscape.

Akechidaira is also well known as a prime autumn foliage spot. From season to season, visitors can enjoy the ever-changing beauty of nature and its delicate yet powerful forms.

As for the origin of the name “Akechidaira,” one legend suggests that Akechi Mitsuhide—who is said to have fled to Mt. Hiei after the Battle of Yamazaki and later taken the name Tenkai—named this site, considered the most scenic spot in Nikko, in order to leave his name behind (this story is based on legend only).

※ Please note that the Akechidaira Ropeway will be temporarily closed during the following period due to renovation work.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your kind understanding.

Nikko Area

The Nikko area, in the northwestern part of the prefecture, is particularly mountainous. In the midst of the rich nature, including the 2,486-meter-high volcano Mt. Nantai, Lake Chuzenji, and Kegon Falls, there are numerous shrines and temples that are registered as UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites. From Kinugawa Onsen to Kawaji Onsen, hot springs can also be found throughout the area. There are a wide range of outdoor activities to enjoy as well, such as stand-up paddleboarding in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter.
